Dental Implants
Dental implants provide a permanent solution if you are missing teeth through extractions or injury. The benefit of implants is that, unlike bridges, they require no modification of the surrounding teeth.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone and left to fuse with your natural bone to form a support for a cosmetic crown that looks and feels like a real tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth or a whole arch of teeth. Dental implants are the nearest solution for healthy teeth that look and feel natural, allowing you to enjoy everyday life with confidence.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
The main benefit of a dental implant is that the replacement tooth is fully fixed to the jaw, is solid to bite on and looks and feels much like your missing natural tooth. Furthermore, you do not have to do anything to the adjacent teeth which remain untouched throughout the process. Dental implants are often the first choice to restore missing or damaged teeth. Further benefits are:
Stimulates and preserves jawbone – Dental implants are able to stimulate and preserve the jawbone to prevent bone loss and maintain your facial appearance.
Natural healthy looking teeth – dentals implants restore a lost tooth so that it looks, fits and feels like a natural tooth allowing you to get on with normal everyday life.
Longer lasting results – unlike traditional, tooth-supported dental bridges which will eventually need to be replaced, dental implants can last a lifetime when properly fitted and cared for.
Improved facial support – no need to worry about changes to your smile or your facial appearance. With dental implants the natural shape of your face is maintained so that you can talk, eat and smile with confidence.
Natural bone is restored – dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone and helps to prevent bone loss.
Convenient and easy to maintain – dental implants can be treated exactly the same as your natural teeth. Providing you look after your implants by regular brushing and flossing, they should last you a lifetime.
Healthy teeth are protected – unlike a tooth-supported bridge that can grind away the teeth on one or both sides of a missing tooth, dental implants go into the jawbone and replace your missing tooth root without impacting any healthy teeth.
Dental Implant Consultation
You will be invited by Castle Dental for an initial consultation where your dentist will carry out an assessment to determine your suitability for dental implants. Most people are suitable for the procedure, but in some cases minor bone grafting to the jaw may be required to provide additional support for the new implant. At the consultation, your dentist will discuss the appropriate dental implant options with you. They may also take dental impressions, record your tooth shade and take photographs – all of which will assist our dental technicians in the manufacturing of your new cosmetic crowns.
3D CAT Scan
A 3D CAT scan maybe required before your implants can be fitted. The scan will assess the structure of hard and soft tissues to ensure the best possible outcome for your teeth is achieved.
Dental Implant Procedure
The process of fitting a dental implant is relatively simple and will be carried out at our dental surgery in Knaresborough. Most people experience very little pain as a result of the surgery and consider the benefits to vastly outweigh any discomfort experienced.
When will the cosmetic crown be fitted?
In order for your dental implant to achieve a higher success rate, it is strongly advised that osseointegration is allowed to happen before the new crown is fitted. Osseointegration is the process whereby bone cells attach themselves directly to the titanium surface, essentially locking the implant into the jaw bone. This process normally takes around 3-4 months. Your dentist can discuss further with you the benefits and drawbacks to fittinga temporary crown before osseointegration has occurred, at your initial consultation.
Dental implants & dentures
A limited number of implants can also be used very
effectively to stabilise and improve the retention of removable dentures.
